At the beginning of The Crystal Crux – Cold Knight, Pero de Alava has fallen off a mountain and is in crisis, unsure if he is badly injured and hallucinating or dead. Words and images are washing over him, drowning him in premonitions, visions and memories, most of them disorienting and haphazard. But one that is not confusing is the memory of the time he climbed a mountainous bluff in Spain with his father called Picu Urriellu.
At one point, Pero slips and as he is falling, his father grabs him and saves him, his feet dangling over the tops of trees.
Pero is able to right himself as his father explains that this is precisely the reason he brought him up here. Blassilo tells Pero, “This happens to everyone who tries to climb this bitch. She’ll never let you win.”
The mountain is like life itself…
