It wasn’t my original intention when I first began writing The Crystal Crux to include Scripture in the books, but I was still a teen when I created the first draft and that was a long, long time ago.
When I learned I could self-publish, I got serious about doing this, about completing this story. And I really had no idea it would end up being five books worth of material. It has grown a lot, as have I.
So when I started working on Betrayal, I decided to loosely base things that were happening on each day of the ten-day adventure to a Bible verse. It doesn’t necessarily apply to everything happening on that day, but it usually is focused on Pero de Alava. This is, after all, his story.

Being a man of faith who believes in Yahshua the Messiyah and the Red Letters of the Bible, it was important for me to find ways to incorporate the positive, inspiring parts of my faith into a rather dark story. I didn’t want it to sound preachy. I’m not religious myself in that I don’t believe in Christianity as a religion, so it is not difficult for me to see the religion of the medieval times as wicked as the tyrants in the palaces. In fact, I made the tyrants and the Church come together to attack Pero and his people.
And while Pero himself is not religious, he was raised by a religious mother and many tenets of her beliefs and faith are part of him. These mystical creeds are blended with the worldly reality of trust and loyalty taught to Pero by his father.
And when finally placed in a precarious position where his faith and loyalties are challenged by very real threats against his loved ones, Pero loses heart and seeks a way out. His enemies give him that out. They send him on a dangerous, suicidal quest. Of course, his loved ones beg him not to do this, but his logic fails him. He thinks he is cursed, and everyone will be better off without him. He doesn’t want any of them to fight and die for his sins. He believes that their enemies only want him, and he can carry his sins into the wilderness and save them.
On the very first day, we learn, Pero was wrong.

Just a reminder, the last book in the series, Beautiful, is due to be released on November 18th (2023). The Kindle version is available now on Presale and will download automatically on the 18th just in time for the Holidays. I believe this link will take you to the presale. https://www.amazon.com/Crystal-Crux-Beautiful-Allen-Werner-ebook/dp/B0CM2C8JG3
Hope everyone is excited by the release of the book as I am. This has taken two years. Lots of editing. Lots of long nights. I’ve grown a lot as a writer, and I believe this is my best book yet. Be sure to let me know what you think!
Stay inspired and keep reading!
