At the very beginning of The Crystal Crux series, in the first book Betrayal, the antagonists meet in a secret cella beneath the Castel dell Ovo in Parthenope. They inform a church official of their plan to remove Pero de Alava, a troublesome official in Capua, who was appointed by the recently deceased emperor. Now seems like a perfect time to act. They all want Pero gone, especially the Castellan of the city, Rugerius Fabbro, who had his jaw broken by Pero in a drunken conflict a few months earlier.
