When I Lost My Brother

On December 13, 1986, I reached the low point of my life.

I was the eldest and Mike was a year younger than me. Both of my younger brothers, Mike and Steve, were born with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. For a while, they both walked but their gait was unsteady and eventually the disease robbed them of their ability to stand.

Mike and Steve ended up in wheelchairs.

Since Mike and I were only a year apart, we were best friends. I did everything I could to make sure he lived as normal a life as possible. We went everywhere together.

That was until at the age of 20, the disease took his life.

I was a wreck. I didn’t have a clue how to handle it and spent months living with depression.

One of the ways I got back out of the depression was by writing.

And one of my first writings was The Grand Transition.

It was a simple and short, to the point look inside my heart as I sat alone at his bedside after he was gone.

In 1989, I entered this short article in the Wisconsin Regional Writer’s Association’s Jade Ring contest and won first prize. I did not expect that. I didn’t expect anyone to notice the article. There was nothing professional about it. It was, as the judges said, one of the shortest articles entered. It had several grammatical and spelling errors. And still, they said, “it is a testament to the power of writing.”

So, if you want something to bring tears to your eyes in a few quick minutes, give The Grand Transition a read.
