There are quite a few dark chapters in The Crystal Crux series but Chapter 8 of Betrayal maybe one of the darkest of all.

It is a flashback chapter. The villainous Rugerius Fabbro is a twelve-year-old page trying to live in a foreign country without any friends. He’s violent and quarrelsome and being molested by a brewery thrall named Dugaro. He’s too embarrassed to tell anyone what is happening to him, but another young page, Bergus, is witness to one of the sexual assaults. Bergus, not coming from powerful nobility or money, decides he wants to use this to his advantage and befriend the rich problem child.

In the previous chapter, Bergus convinces Rugerius to ditch their labors to exact some revenge on Dugaro. Bergus even supplies the knives, the seax’s they need to do the job.
