If you collect books like I do, what is the oldest book in your collection?

I don’t have a lot of money to invest in this hobby but I have several books published in the 1930s but they are not the oldest book.

The oldest book I have been able to obtain is a collection of writings by Henry David Thoreau simply called, Letters To Various Persons. And the title is accurate in its contents. It is simply a collection of letters Thoreau wrote to others and was published posthumously. Thoreau died on May 6, 1862.

The original or first edition of Letters was released in 1865.

My copy of Letters is a later edition released in 1881 by The Riverside Press, Cambridge.

The book is not in the greatest condition. The cover is worn and the spine a bit frayed. The pages are browning. Some pages are loose, and a few are torn but it is complete and sound.

I’ve never actually read it. I’ve have fingered through a few pages here and there, and read a few paragraphs, but it mainly sits on my shelf collecting dust.

I still keep my eyes peeled for other old books, but they can be expensive unless you get lucky and find them at yard sales where people don’t know what it is they are selling. They just want to clean house.

Remember, the 2nd edition of Cold Knight was recently released. The 2nd edition of Shimmer is due out on February 29, 2024.
