When A Book Is Not A Book – YET

The first draft of anything is shit.” – Earnest Hemingway

I started writing a new book and right now everything around me is shit, scribbles, post its, scraps of paper, charts, piles of reference books. My desk is almost as messy as my mind.

You can fix anything but a blank page. – Nora Roberts

I’ve got this great idea for a story and a few of the characters, but I am just getting to know the characters. I’ve highlighted some of their basic traits, physical features, certain mannerisms and such, but to get down into the nitty-gritty of their past and the things they have thought and done during their lives takes time. And it also opens the door to other characters.

Who were the other people in their lives?
Who influenced them?
Who helped them?
Who hurt them?
Who inspired them?
Who taught them?
What have they seen?
What have they experienced?
What do they know now and what do they have to learn before the end?

Good writing is rewriting. – Truman Capote

I have a handful of chapters outlined and a few written out although those are bound to change drastically. I’m already convinced I won’t be starting the book with the chapter I initially thought would be the beginning of the book. In fact, the first two or three might not be included at all and what happens in them might be something that is covered quickly in someone’s memory of past events. Writing is such a weird math. 2+2 doesn’t always equal 4.

A writer is a writer because, even when there is no hope, even when nothing you do shows signs of promise, you keep writing anyway.” – Junot Diaz

So, despite the chaos about me, I will keep writing anyway. I can see a lot of this story growing in my head already. It keeps getting bigger and deeper every day. Now it’s a matter of getting it out in the magical form of words, sentences and paragraphs.

Allen M Werner is the author of The Crystal Crux Series.

“Do you think most who dream, dream of sleep or rehashing their past as it really was? Most who come to Eliade rebuke what is common and orderly to embrace what is ludicrous, strange and fantastic. They would have seized the moment and done vulgar things, dishonest things, questionable things.”
“Why? Why would they do that?”
“Because we are not real to them. We are inhuman. They create us so they do not have to care about us. It is in their evil hearts to exploit and use people, to take from us what they can’t receive or achieve when they are awake and at home. Power. Riches. Lust. Fantasy. It makes them feel stronger and more secure.” Lure wrapped her arms tightly around Pero’s arm and held his hand. “You have the light. A gift. It works in tandem with your mind. It affords you a special balance that makes you a Vicar. Take that unique light and brighten the world.”
