Christ Is Among Them

I used to write poetry when I was younger but got away from it.
I still don’t write it very often.
But every once in a while, when the moment hits, I feel inspired to try based on something I heard or read.
“Christ Is Among Them” is a Free Verse poem.
Let me know what you think. Remember, I’m not well-practiced at this art.

What if I told you, Christ is among them?
Those weary eyes, those chattering teeth, those swollen feet.
Would you believe me?
Would you seek Him out?
How will you find Him?
Will you inspect those raggedy strangers one by one? Will you know Him by His eyes? By His clothes?
And what if He will not speak to you?
What if He will not say He is the Christ?
What if He is mute? What if He is deaf?
What if He speaks a language foreign to you?
What if His skin is a different color than yours?
His complexion? His hair?
What if I told you, Christ is among them?
The migrant at the border.
The poor in the city.
The drifter sleeping on a street.
If He won’t reveal Himself to your satisfaction, will you risk crucifying Him anew?
What if those weary eyes, chattering teeth and swollen feet belong to His disciples?
What will Christ have to say to you when He does speak?
Why were you afraid of them? Of Him?
Why didn’t you feed them? Or Him?
Why didn’t you shelter them? Or Him?
Were you counting the cost of doing so?
Was it worth your soul, convincing yourself, that Christ couldn’t possibly be living among them?

Hebrews 13:1-2 ‘Let brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

MATTHEW 25:31-46 (The sheep and the goats)

Matthew 7:21 ‘Not everyone that saith unto Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of Heaven; but He that doeth the will of My Father which is in Heaven.”

1Corinthians 13:11-13 ‘When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child. But when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass darkly; but then shall face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.’
