In the Shades of Myth novellas, I try to dramatize lesser-known characters and stories from Greek Mythology.
While reading up on the ferryman, Charon, I had difficulty finding an angle that hadn’t already been explored so I decided to invent a character who is going to face Charon. In doing so, I was able to maintain Charon’s mysterious facade while creating the hellish world around the River Styx.
Isidore is an ancient Greek warrior who is visited by an angel. He is told he will die. The angel has special feelings for Isidore and has slipped outside her assigned errands by the gods to help him reach the Elysian Fields.

“There are some who don’t want you to reach Paradise. It is always like that amongst the gods. Some help the mortals. Some oppose the mortals. I am a messenger who loves you and has taken a liking to your cause.” She winked as if it didn’t matter now.

You have to fight through hell to reach Paradise.
