People who have read and reviewed Betrayal often bring up Chapter 22 – Purple Peacock.
I think this is a favorite among many readers.
Francis Whitehall has just saved a young fool on a mule from possibly being dead or wounded for life, and now he’s got to get about making some riches on the tourney field.
And as he scans the hostilities, he picks out a pompous knight richly dressed and trying to avoid the fray.
Despite improvements to govern the sport and the increased presence of field judges, tournament marshals were still unable to clamp down on all the poaching. It was a practice made popular by the old and wealthy elites who still wished to participate in the melee without hazarding the initial charge.
Excerpt from Betrayal
Francis, who we already know is a man of honor and integrity, takes a dislike to these poachers. He decides that this pompous purple knight will be his next victim.
Slapping down his visor, Francis spurred Molly and shouted for all the world to hear. “Prepare yourself ya bastard!”
Excerpt from Betrayal
The purple peacock, surprised by Francis advancing on him, turns his horse and runs.
Molly takes offense to this and runs even faster. They catch them quickly.
With a singular blow of his heavy mace to the backside of the rival’s steel-plated helm, Francis sent plumage flying everywhere. The fleeing horseman’s bonnet disengaged from his head and he, in turn, tumbled to the ground in a riotous crash.
Excerpt from Betrayal
Francis is so confident and excited, he dismounts and draws his sword. He throws aside his helmet, blond hair churning in the wind. He knew he couldn’t lose.
Devoid of options, out of breath and resolve, the peacock capitulated. He fell on one knee, tossed aside his spent sword, and surrendered.
Excerpt from Betrayal
Things were finally looking brighter for the Whitehall family. This peacock was going to have to surrender up a lot of riches for his loss.
And there was still time to find another knight to defeat. Francis loved the tournaments.
And that’s all I got for you today.
Next installment, Francis and Pero’s course is finally met and finalized.
Until next time, stay inspired and keep reading!
